Idea

The idea was born from the careful observation of the dynamics of the operation of braking systems, especially the transformation of thermal energy during their use and its propagation in the components involved in the braking action. It has been observed that the increase in vehicle performance and the predisposition of manufacturers to reduce costs, and especially with the advent of sintered materials, in some braking systems those characteristics of performance balance that they had in the past have been lost, hence the need to "invent" a device that had two functions: the first to limit the thermal transfer of the heat from the pads towards the caliper and the braking system oil, and the second to cool the brake pad to avoid its use in critical temperature regimes.

These special "Hybrid" plates were therefore created, consisting of 2 parts, one part in a special thermal steel and the other in a light alloy heat sink machined from solid Teremal, a particular light alloy that has a strong heat exchange capacity.

The project saw over a year of testing and comparisons on the track until the final version.

The Project

Our heat sinks have been designed using two different metal elements in order to optimize the thermal insulation of the pad from the caliper and its cooling.

The main body of our heatsink is made of a special thermal steel with a high degree of heat conductivity. The material is first laser cut and then CNC machined in our work centers. The slots are designed to reduce the contact surface and also to let out the hot air formed inside the piston cavity, reducing the effect of a hot chamber and the propagation of heat into the piston and also to the oil. Connected to the main body of the steel heatsink is a light alloy heatsink made of a special high thermal conductivity aluminum, which has the task of helping the heat dissipation process.

Our tests have shown a reduction in pad temperature of up to 20 degrees followed by an increase in braking, an incredible initial bite stable over time, an excellent Roll Back of the brake caliper pistons and a consequent reduction in static braking force. In addition, the pads have shown a 25% longer life, this for a less burdensome temperature of use.

The project took over a year to develop and during this time we used different motorcycles always obtaining the same result.

The development

The development of the project lasted a year, we started from the choice of materials and their manufacturing process. Different configurations and different processing of the materials were tested, we used data acquisition tools and special thermal cameras to view the heat propagation by examining different points of the brake caliper and the pad. We spent over 500 hours on the circuit and 20,000 km of road travel.

In total, the product was tested on six different motorcycles and under different conditions of use.

We have therefore arrived at these configurations which in our opinion guarantee the exact compromise between efficiency, weight, cost and ease of installation.
